The Times Online editor-in-chief, Anne Spackman, is to become the Times's comment editor, it has been announced, as the role of editor-in-chief of Times Online is to be broken up.
Ms Spackman was Times managing editor directly before being appointed editor-in-chief of Times Online in July 2006, but her current role is likely to be split between two senior members of staff at the newspaper.
Ms Spackman has been responsible for the Times Online website during a crucial two years of newspaper development.
The site beat its own previous record to reach 134,114,119 impressions in the month of August as a result of the Olympics, despite the telegraph.co.uk relaunching over the summer following a six-month renovation process.
Ms Spackman herself oversaw a £10 million investment into Time Online, which created the site's news plus views approach, allowing readers to comment on news stories directly.
It is believed part of Ms Spackman's role as the Times comment editor will be to increase the importance of comment to the paper's readership.
