News International to charge for web news

6 Aug 09 - 12:00AM
Rupert Murdoch has announced that all of the newspapers owned by News International will charge for online news within the next 12 months.

The billionaire will levy charges to customers accessing the Times, Sun and News of the World websites after stating "quality journalism is not cheap".

News International is believed to be seeking new forms of revenue after posting a £2 billion loss for the full financial year to June 2009.

Mr Murdoch insisted that consumers would be willing to pay for big stories such as the Telegraph's coverage of the MP expenses scandal, which the media mogul described as a "big scoop".

He said: "We're certainly satisfied that we can produce significant revenues from the sale of digital delivery of newspaper content," according to the Guardian.

Rupert Murdoch is the founder and chief executive of News Corp, one of the biggest media groups in the world.

The conglomerate owns many of the world's most influential media titles including the Fox television network and the Wall Street Journal.
