News on the internet should remain free, the prime minister has said.
The Guardian reported yesterday (April 13th) that Gordon Brown spoke out in a Radio Times interview against News Corp's decision to put up a 'pay wall' on its Times newspapers.
Mr Brown said: "I don't think you are going to be able to put things behind pay walls in the way that people think.
"People will pay for certain things, and should pay for certain things, but I think there's a whole sort of element of communication that's got to be free.
"People mind paying for basic news."
The comments follow on from an intense public war of words between senior Labour figures and News Corp owner Rupert Murdoch, who switched the allegiance of The Sun newspaper from Labour to the Conservative Party last year.
News Corp owner Rupert Murdoch announced the long-awaited move last month.
From June onwards, readers will have to pay either a weekly or daily rate to access the site, though print subscribers to the Times and the Sunday Times will be able to view content for free.
