NUJ ballot draws scorn from Trinity Mirror

30 June 2009 17:23

Trinity Mirror publishing group is facing a ballot of 150 National Union of Journalists (NUJ) members in the Midlands regarding a possible strike action.

The NUJ claim that the threat of industrial action is due to the planned closure of eight Midland titles by the group.

However, Trinity Mirror has not commented on the closure of publications and as yet the rumours have not been confirmed.

A spokesman for Trinity Mirror said: "We are very disappointed that the NUJ has chosen this course of action without even engaging with us in our agreed dispute resolution procedures.

"It is highly irresponsible and does absolutely nothing to address the very real issues facing our Midlands businesses."

General Secretary of the NUJ said that the members who are involved in the ballot are proud journalists who want to "protect jobs and provide a service-to-be-proud of for readers".

Trinity Mirror publishes more than 400 regional newspapers and is one of the most prominent media employers in the UK, employing in excess of 8,000 individuals.
