Frontrunner for ITV chief exec job joins BT

18 June 2009 16:36

The man who has been consistently named as the most likely candidate to become the new chief executive (CEO) of ITV has joined BT, according to reports.

Former BSkyB CEO Tony Ball has joined the telecom specialist in a non-executive position.

Reports are conflicting as to whether this means Mr Ball is now less likely to take over from Michael Grade at ITV.

However, the Guardian reported that he is "thought to still be in the running".

A source told the newspaper "There will be potential conflicts relating to BT Vision and how BT ends out linking up with Project Canvas. There will be some obvious conflicts of interest at times. Ball is a good appointment for BT but I can't see how there is an easy fit [to also do ITV]."

The CEO position at ITV was made available after Michael Grade announced in April that he would step down from the helm earlier than he had first planned.

Mr Grade previously announced, in 2007, that he would relinquish day-to-day control at ITV within three years.
