Online marketing 'must be catchy'

4 May 2010 10:26

Online marketing campaigns must be "interesting and catchy" if they are to work, one expert has said.

Speaking at trade exhibition Internet World, Jim Monks, chief operating officer at Twitter aggregator TweetMeme, said that as new media is "bombarded" with adverts, marketers must make a campaign more interesting.

One marketing tool the expert suggested was to encourage re-tweets on Twitter.

This involves relying on a target audience to forward an advert on to their followers on the site.

He explained that although the campaign will not reach as many people as it could, the recipient is more likely to trust the recommendation as it has been sent by a friend.

Mr Monk added: "If it's a cool video or something and your friend has just sent it to you and said 'you should take a look', you'll probably take a look."

Twitter recently announced that it is to introduce its own advertising portal, which will come in the form of regular messages to those who search for keywords and will be labelled as 'promoted Tweets'.
