Telegraph Media Group enjoys increased profits

Despite falling advertising revenues, the Telegraph Media Group has managed to post a sharp increase in profits for the year.

Operating profit for 2009 was up by 29 per cent compared to the previous year, totalling £41.4 million.

Profit before tax was £53.1 million, including an exceptional profit of £13.2 million.

This was a substantial turnaround on 2008 when the company recorded a pre-tax loss of £15.7 million as a result of restructuring costs.

According to the Telegraph newspaper, the directors said: "In common with all other consumer-facing media businesses, advertising revenues experienced significant declines.

"However, in a very challenging market place the Telegraph titles increased advertising volume market share, which is a testament to its strength and appeal to customers."

Meanwhile, the latest figures from Nielsen show that a range of newspaper publications saw advertising revenues increase during the first month of this year.

This, and the Telegraph's positive results, is news that will be welcomed by those seeking media sales jobs.
