UK TV media sales 'climbing' in Australia and New Zealand

27 November 2009 16:14

Revenues from overseas media sales of television programmes made in Britain rose by 25 per cent in 2008, new figures have revealed.

According to the latest edition of the annual UK TV Exports Survey, the total value of programmes sold overseas was £980 million last year, with Australia and New Zealand representing the fastest revenue rises.

Exports to those two countries saw a 65 per cent annual rise in value during 2008, while the value of shows sold in the US rose by 11 per cent year-on-year to £350 million, representing more than a third of the overall market.

The figures were published by Pact, which represents the interest of the nation's independent television producers.

According to the association, sales of videos and DVDs contributed a significant amount of the rise, as did the licensing of programmes for merchandising purposes, which brought in £215 million in total.

In other news, the Weather Channel Companies appointed a new head of media sales earlier this month, tasking Ross Webster with overseeing its UK advertising strategy.
