Metro renews Tube contract

5 March 2010 12:15

The Metro newspaper has retained its distribution contract with the London Underground network, extending the deal by another seven-and-a-half years.

Running from April 2nd, the new contract will see Metro continue to offer free copies of its publication to commuters at 250 Tube stops and 14 bus stations.

The newspaper won its first 11-year deal in 1999 to distribute between the hours of 6:00 and 11:30 GMT Monday to Friday.

It is not known whether the Metro faced any rival bids, but other free sheets in the capital have been forced to close in recent months.

The London Evening Standard dropped its 50p cover price in October last year, but since the publication is distributed in the afternoons, it is not in direct competition with the Metro.

News of the contract renewal may be welcomed by those seeking media jobs with parent company Associated Newspapers, as it could signal further job opportunities down the line.

The Metro launched its own application for the iPhone earlier this year, joining a number of newspapers that have entered the smartphone arena in recent months.
