London Evening Standard readership hits 1.37 million

3 February 2010 14:58

Readership of the London Evening Standard reached 1.37 million in the last three months of 2009, figures show.

Between April and September last year, just 556,000 copies were distributed, but since the newspaper dropped its 50p cover price in October, the numbers have more than doubled.

The figures, from the National Readership Survey, correspond to the period from October 11th to the end of December and suggest that the publication has an average of 2.3 readers per copy.

Before the Evening Standard went free, circulation was just 250,000, although this was upped to around 600,000 following the move.

John O'Donnell, advertising director at the newspaper, said: "We are delighted with the numbers as they are higher than we had expected but absolutely in line with our aims."

The news may be welcomed by those seeking media jobs with the London Evening Standard, as it could signal the creation of new posts.

Competition in the London freesheet market is set to hot up this month with the launch of the new London Weekly on February 5th.
