Two newspapers fold in Wales

5 October 2009 12:04

Media recruiters in Wales will have more talent to choose from following the closure of two newspapers.

The Neath and Port Talbot Guardian newspapers have been axed by Media Wales, which has resulted in 16 redundancies, the BBC reports.

One of the main problems is the slowdown in advertising revenue, which is especially true on some of the lesser-performing titles.

This is according to ex-Independent editor Ian Hargreaves, who is analysing Wales' newspaper situation for the assembly government.

Speaking to the BBC, South Wales Evening Post editor Spencer Feeney said the recession was to blame for job losses.

"When people are worried about their jobs and money is tight and they're economising one of the things they do tend to economise on is newspapers," he explained.

The South Wales Evening Post is the country's best selling newspaper, with a daily circulation figure of 46,069.

It has three daily editions - Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire.
