Sydney Morning Herald appoints new editor for 2009

23 December 2008 16:07

The Sydney Morning Herald has appointed Peter Fray, the paper's former London Correspondent, as editor, it has been confirmed.

The move comes only ten months after Mr Fray joined the Canberra Times as editor, and comes at a time in which the newspaper industry is in a "life and death struggle", Mr Fray said.

An email to staff from Lloyd Whish-Wilson, Fairfax Media chief executive and publisher of NSW & ACT Metropolitan Publishing, was quoted in a Guardian report complimenting Mr Fray and welcoming him to the Herald as editor.

"[Mr Fray] has an excellent understanding of the Herald's market and a strategy for the challenges ahead," it read.

The decision to take fresh blood into an organisation comes at an important time, as newspapers are facing increasing levels of competition from online news sources, as well as suffering greatly in the economic downturn.

Regular recruitment, however, could make the difference between success and failure in the year ahead.
