Xfm to receive overhaul, becoming Galaxy

28 August 2008 18:04

Rock and indie radio station Xfm is to become Galaxy FM in Scotland, it has been revealed, as the owner has decided on a rebranding exercise that will incorporate even the music of the Scottish radio station.

The already well-recognised Galaxy network of radio stations is a dance music network, and essentially at odds with the Xfm audience, but the musical output will take some time to change.

Darren Henley, managing director of the brands Classic FM, Xfm and Choice FM, stressed that the change would not be immediate.

"We will still be broadcasting as Xfm Scotland but inevitably our focus will move towards the launch of the new station as the weeks go by," he said.

"I know that there has been a lot of uncertainty and change over the past few months for everyone in Glasgow - and I really do appreciate the very professional way in which you have all carried on working so hard and your willingness to embrace change."

The continued success of the Galaxy brand in England has raised the hopes of many who believe the radio station will do well in Scotland also, although competition from online radio stations has already led analysts to question the future of the traditional radio.
