Haywood scores at Guardian as sports chief

8 August 2008 11:22

Paul Haywood, Daily Mail chief sports writer, will be moving to Guardian News and Media (GNM) once his contract with the right wing tabloid comes to an end.

The move means Mr Haywood will be lending his creative talent to the Guardian, the Observer and guardian.co.uk for a second time, after working there briefly a decade ago.

His name will not appear on any by-lines immediately however, as Mr Haywood will join GNM once the company's offices have been moved to King's Cross in north London.

Mr Haywood is a distinguished sports journalist, having several times won the British Press Awards' 'sports writer of the year', as well as the Sky Sports award for best football writer.

And he is unlikely to feel out of his depth among GNM, having worked as chief sports writer for both the Independent and Daily Telegraph before making his return to the Guardian.

Ben Clissitt, sports editor of the Guardian, said: "Paul is one of Britain's outstanding sports writers and we are delighted to welcome him back to the company.

"He is knowledgeable, thoughtful and well connected and we are extraordinarily excited about the contribution he is going to make online and in print," he added.
