Murdoch issues teaser over India TV

Rupert Murdoch has announced that News Corporation will indeed be expanding in India, with six new regional TV channels across the country.

There has until now been little public discussion about the TV channels, and speculation over which cities they will be broadcast in has not been confirmed by News Corp.

It has been confirmed however, that the expansion will benefit from a £51 million investment, and will be run by the Star TV group - News Corporation's Hong Kong based media group - which already operates 17 channels in the country.

The six new channels - all Indian language ventures - will deepen the company's ties to the country and will ensure News Corp an even greater slice of Indian's increasingly lucrative media market.

The move represents both a recent surge in interest in Asian economies from around the world, as well Rupert Murdoch's insatiable appetite for global media ownership that has made him such a well-known figure.

Recently however, the News Corporation chairman and chief executive has been reported as being unnerved by the prospect of future profits taking a beating, despite the six months to June 2008 recording a profit hike of 59 per cent, from $3.4 billion to $5.4 billion.

For the corporation's fourth quarter, earnings were up to $1.5 billion.
