Cloud-based computing to change IT opportunities?

21 May 2010 12:11

Cloud-based computing could change the IT jobs landscape, new research has found.

ABI Research has reported that revenues from cloud computing could grow to £249 million by 2015.

According to its report, around 143 million consumers used the free or low-cost applications last year, as a form of back-up or storage.

Many more companies are allowing consumers to access their services for free, hoping word-of-mouth will encourage investment in more fully-featured version of popular applications.

Larry Fisher, the practice director at ABI Research, said that: "Consumers will increasingly use free cloud-based applications in the coming years, which will get them used to storing documents, photos, et cetera in the cloud, and to sharing/working on them with others."

He added that the increasing use of mobile devices to access the internet, instead of PCs was likely to drive the growth in cloud-based computing.

This could mean spell new opportunities for marketers in IT and technology services, as social networking and the technology sector develop new ways of working together.
