BBC iPlayer reaches new monthly record

The BBC iPlayer proved that online video is continuing to grow as a popular media platform by reporting record monthly viewing figures for January.
In news that may interest those seeking digital media jobs relating to on-demand television services and broadcast media, a total of 120 million programmes were watched on the iPlayer last month.
The BBC said the figures were boosted by consumers catching up on Christmas television shows, as well as the cold wintry weather, with many people choosing to stay indoors instead of venturing out in the snow.
During the month, more than 3.2 million requests for TV and radio shows were made every day, with one fifth of these coming from Virgin Media's on demand platform.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the BBC is planning to launch an iPlayer application for smartphones, as well as news and sports apps.
Available initially on the iPhone, it could later be rolled out to other handsets, including the BlackBerry.
