Evening Standard to launch mobile application

The London Evening Standard is following in the footsteps of other newspapers and launching its own mobile phone application.
Funded through advertising, it will be available on the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android platforms and will be free to use.
The Evening Standard dropped its 50 pence cover price in October last year and has now firmly established itself in the capital's freesheet market.
Its digital manager Tim Smith said the mobile app will simply be an extension of the reading experience for those who don't have immediate access to the print publication or the website.
The move, which comes after the free morning newspaper the Metro launched an iPhone application, could be good news for digital media job seekers, as it could lead to increased competition in the market, opening up the possibility of new job opportunities in the future.
Other newspapers to have released smartphone apps include the Guardian, which is charging users for access.
