Google ventures into social networking

11 February 2010 11:47

Search giant Google is looking to compete in the social networking sphere with the launch of a new product called Google Buzz.

The application is designed to integrate directly into Google's web-based email service Gmail and will enable the sharing of updates, photos and videos.

As with other social networks like Facebook and Twitter, it will also allow users to start conversations about anything they find interesting.

Critics seem certain that Google Buzz will not be able to take on Facebook, which is by far the most popular social network on the web.

But it could provide some healthy competition and prompt other players in the field to develop new features and applications, which may be good news for digital media job seekers.

Meanwhile, Facebook has celebrated its sixth birthday by announcing that worldwide user numbers have reached 400 million.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said this is more than double the number of people who were using the social network this time last year.
