Facebook celebrates 6th birthday with new user milestone

8 February 2010 11:24

Social networking site Facebook has just celebrated its sixth birthday by announcing that it now has 400 million users around the world.

In a blog post, its founder Mark Zuckerberg said this is more than double the number of people on the website this time last year.

"We've made great progress over the last year towards making the world more open and connected," he stated.

The digital entrepreneur said that to mark the 6th birthday of Facebook, a number of new products and features would be released.

These have included a new layout designed to make navigation easier, as well as an improved photo uploader that makes the process faster and simpler.

According to recent data from Hitwise, Facebook has now surpassed Google News to become the fourth biggest distributor of news on the web.

The figures show that it was responsible for 3.52 per cent of visits to news websites last month, while Google News was responsible for 1.39 per cent of traffic.
