BBC considers paid-for iPlayer

23 October 2009 11:53

The BBC is looking into the possibility of launching a paid-for international version of its iPlayer service.

According to BBC Worldwide, the move would enable the broadcaster to raise revenue by offering premium content to global audiences.

The international player would host episodes from BBC shows such as Doctor Who, Torchwood and Top Gear, as well as historical material from BBC archives.

However, due to rights issues, it would not show domestic iPlayer content.

"Millions of people love Torchwood and would probably pay ten bucks an episode rather than two bucks," said Luke Bradley Jones, head of the BBC Worldwide's digital operations in the US.

The move could interest those seeking media jobs with the BBC or other organisations expanding into the digital sphere.

Elsewhere, software giant Microsoft has announced that the Sky Player will be built into its new Windows 7 operating system.

The digital video player will be integrated into the Media Centre.
