Domain name decision could open up new online marketing opportunities

10 March 2010 08:20

Several new online marketing opportunities could be opened up to businesses across the UK should the national registry for domain names opt to give the green light to one or two letter names.

At present, many marketing professionals are being frustrated by the existing rules laid out by Nominet, which stipulate that one character or two letter .uk domain names are not permitted.

Among the businesses thereby prevented from boosting their online marketing presence by using their initials as their main web address include British Airways and the mobile telecoms firm 3.

However, this could all be about to change, with Nominet chief executive Lesley Cowley having asked interested parties to contribute to its three-month consultation on the matter.

"We are committed to ensuring that the release of these short domains is conducted in an appropriate, responsible and fair manner," he was quoted by Brand Republic as stating.

"We therefore urge all Internet stakeholders including consumers, industry and government to submit their feedback during the next three months."

At the end of last month, Andrew Harrison wrote in a piece for Marketing Week that growing numbers of digital media jobs are set to be created in the UK as businesses up their IT interest.
