Newspapers enjoy upturn in advertising volumes, report reveals

12 March 2010 17:06

Media sales jobs prospects in the UK newspaper industry look to have improved with the news that a range of publications enjoyed an increase in advertising revenues over the first month of the year.

According to the latest figures compiled by Nielsen, some of the biggest titles in the newspaper market saw a marked upturn in the volume of advertisements they carried in January, following on from a tough 2009.

Among the biggest winners were the Daily Mail, which saw its advertising column centimetres (CCM) figure rise from 151,000 to 220,000 over the course of the first month of the new decade, while the Express similarly saw an increase in CCM from 136,000 to 181,000 over the same period.

At the same time, improvements were also seen at both the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian at one end of the market, as well as at the Daily Mirror and the Sun at the other, though advertising volumes at the Independent and Daily Star were seen to fall.

At the start of the month, Metro similarly helped to improve the outlook for media sales jobs in the sector by confirming it has renewed its distribution contract on the London Underground.
