NCTJ to trial digital media qualification

17 December 2009 10:36

Given the increasingly important role that the internet is now playing in the distribution of news content, the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) is piloting a new qualification focusing on digital media.

Entrants will be tested on their knowledge of social networking sites and other multimedia platforms, ensuring they are equipped to work online as well as in the print and broadcast industries.

The preliminary exam syllabus will test students on their ability to write copy for the web and construct headlines that will be picked up by search engines.

Donald Martin, a director at the NCTJ, said that today's media recruiters are looking for candidates who are comfortable working across several platforms.

"It is vitally important that we provide trainees with the core skills to allow them to work in whatever sector of the media," he remarked.

There are 42 NCTJ-accredited education providers across the UK offering journalism training courses that prepare students to sit preliminary exams.
