Guardian website top for online readership

13 November 2009 15:35

The Guardian overtook the Daily Mail to become the newspaper with the largest online readership, attracting more than 30 million web users to its site.

Figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations show that unique visits to Guardian News and Media's online network totalled 32,953,433 in September.

This put it ahead of the Daily Mail and the Telegraph, which both broke though the 30 million barrier for the first time during the month.

Emily Bell, director of digital content at Guardian News and Media, said the readership figures represent a new record for the group.

"We are delighted to see a healthy interest in online news across the board," she told the Guardian website. "Both our global and UK success can be attributed to our sustained investment in web content."

Those seeking digital media jobs may be buoyed by the announcement, as it suggests that online news content is becoming an increasingly popular form of delivery.

Meanwhile, new media age has reported that the Times may start charging for access to its online new stories in the first quarter of next year.
