Year ahead 'crucial' for digital marketing

31 December 2008 11:36

The next 12 months will be critical for digital media companies, it has been suggested by one search agency.

BigMouthMedia has claimed that a number of factors will combine to ensure that the coming year is perhaps more crucial than any the sector has had to deal with in the past.

"Digital marketing has several key advantages when it comes to trading through a recession, but the downturn will wipe some of the smaller players off the map," said Steve Leach, CEO at BigMouthMedia.

"Agencies reliant on one or two key clients will be particularly vulnerable, and I expect to see a rash of acquisitions and company failures radically reshape the industry over the course of 2009."

The digital marketing sector relies heavily on confident spending conditions and the predicted recession in 2009 is unlikely to encourage many companies to invest in advertising.

Many companies are, however, maintaining their recruitment in order to keep ahead of competitors by providing an influx of fresh ideas and skills.
