Media industry 'creating more digital marketing jobs'

24 February 2010 15:25

More digital media jobs could be created in London and Manchester as the industry comes to appreciate the benefits offered by IT and the web.

That is according to an opinion piece on Marketing Week by freelance expert Andrew Harrison, who urged the government to do more to support a transition away from analogue in Britain's creative industries.

He highlighted how digital infrastructure can match the home-grown advantages provided to Britain's media industry in the form of the spread of native English speakers around the world and a concentration of global talent in London.

Mr Harrison suggested that recent media sales activity at agency WPP underlines the importance of vision and investment in future technologies.

"Last week was a huge one for WPP's Group M buying unit and media shops," he said, following news that MediaCom had successfully won a pitch for the COI account, the largest of its kind to date in the UK.

On top of that, Mindshare retained its hold of Unilever's media account for numerous territories, while Maxus was able to sign BT to its client roster.

"For the ad sector ... keypad skills and digital literacy will become as important as the ability to read.

WPP is the second largest communications services company in the world by revenue, and is considered one of the major advertising holding companies along with Omnicom, Interpublic and Publicis.
