Project Kangaroo loses chief to Microsoft

11 November 2008 17:43

The joint BBC/ITV/Channel 4 broadband service referred to as project Kangaroo has lost its chief executive Ashley Highfield, it has been revealed.

A MediaGuardian.co.uk report confirms that, following just four months in the job, Mr Highfield has left to become managing director for Microsoft UK's online operation.

Originally planned for a launch this year, project Kangaroo (the working title for the service) has been delayed well into 2009 by the Competition Commission as it conducts an investigation into the competitiveness of UK broadband TV services.

It has been claimed by companies such as Virgin Media and Sky that a venture part-funded by public funds (through its involvement with the BBC) would have an unfair advantage in the commercial world of the web.

Mr Highfield received warm comments from project Kangaroo chairman Ben McOwen Wilson, and made his own statement regarding his choice to join Microsoft.

"I was presented with an amazing opportunity which I couldn't turn down, and I am looking forward to embarking on my new challenge, while wishing everyone at the project continued success," he said.
