UK adults increase media consumption

7 July 2008 13:31

Media consumption amongst adults has increased by six per cent over the past two years, according to a new TouchPoints 2 study.

According to the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), the spread of media multi-tasking has driven the increase. The figures show that adults spend nearly a quarter of their time watching TV, while 13 per cent of time is spent listening to the radio and seven per cent online.

Mark Cross, communications planning director at COI, told Arif Durrani: "Multi-channel solutions are becoming increasingly important. As these opportunities increase we need to make sure we are exploiting them. We think that TouchPoints has an active role to play in this agenda."

The study revealed that over 80 per cent of those surveyed had consumed more than one type of media within a half-hour period, while under-25s are increasingly using the web to consume all types of media.

The implications for the media and journalism jobs market are very promising, with ease of access increasing demand and new arenas and formats rapidly establishing themselves.
