European Commission urged to step up IP enforcement

In a new report, Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) has warned of an "alarming rise in piracy-driven job loss" in the creative industries.
It claims that by 2015, some 1.2 million jobs may be lost to illegal downloading of music, films and video games, resulting in billions of pounds worth of lost revenue.
"These dire consequences call for an urgent response by policymakers, consumers and the creative industry itself," said BASCAP coordinator Jeffrey Hardy.
If the European Commission heeds the warnings, those seeking jobs in intellectual property could find that some interesting new opportunities arise.
This week, the UK's House of Lords passed a bill that could force internet service providers to suspend the accounts of web users found to be persistently downloading material illegally.
It will now go to a vote in the House of Commons.
