Intellectual property theft threat 'being ignored'

18 December 2008 15:53

Government research into the ways in which companies are protecting themselves from intellectual property (IP) theft has found many industries to be "complacent", it has been reported.

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has described as "complacent" the attitude of many businesses which are aware of the need to protect IP but are doing nothing about it.

IPO director of copyright and IP enforcement Ed Quilty said: "Intellectual property is central to the UK economy and therefore businesses of all sizes cannot afford to be complacent in respecting its value.

"Ensuring effective measures are in place to prevent workplace IP crime are an important part of this."

As companies enter 2009 there may be a strong temptation to simply tread water and cut investment in such areas but through regular and decisive recruitment, companies can ensure that the freshest ideas are always at hand.

Being such a modern problem, the solutions to IP theft lie in the teaming of experienced managers and newly recruited staff, who can bring with them the most cutting-edge solutions.
